Market on Ice revitalizes the Sunny Brae Rink, which was built in 1922, and was the largest skating rink in Atlantic Canada at the time. In 1928, the rink was damaged by fire, and since then has remained unused.
The Market on Ice was designed to revitalize the old rink, and to recreate a community space that can be used all year long. The old concrete walls were left unchanged. The Market in the summer is a vendor space, or a gathering space for events, and in the winter it will be used as a skating rink. The new canopy is created through a truss system of structural steel with carbon fiber fabric on top to protect the steel from the elements, and create a shaded space for occupants.
